Bellway Homes pays Homage to George Orwell with latest launch
Bellway Homes is celebrating one of the UK’s most distinguished literary figures with the forthcoming launch of Orwell Court, on Saturday 9 June, which also represents the company’s first development within the South Lanarkshire town of East Kilbride.
Best known for his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-four and satirical story, Animal Farm, writer George Orwell was a patient at the town’s Hairmyres Hospital when he was admitted during a stay in Scotland in 1947. With Bellway’s development neighbouring the hospital grounds, it seemed only fitting to pay tribute to one of Hairmyres’ most illustrious patients.
Situated off Strathtay Avenue on the edge of East Kilbride, Orwell Court will comprise a striking collection of three, four and five-bedroom homes. The development provides a rare opportunity to enjoy the convenience of a thriving modern town with the added charm of a highly attractive semi-rural setting.
Fraser Conn, Sales and Marketing Director, says: “Orwell Court seemed an obvious choice when we came to choosing a name for the development. It is well documented that George Orwell stayed at Hairmyres Hospital and has become an important part of local history within the town, it seemed only fitting that we recognise this.”
“Bellway Homes is enjoying a buoyant start to the summer season, which is often a time when the market slows down. Orwell Court represents one of six launches planned by us in June alone, as we have several new phases being released at existing developments, a number of showhome launches and a few new sites coming on board too. We’re determined to keep momentum going at every opportunity, particularly in towns like East Kilbride, where a great location combined with good services and amenities means that demand for quality family homes remains consistent.”
Considered Scotland’s first new town, East Kilbride today represents its sixth largest. The town has grown over the years from a rural village to a vibrant community with all the requisites of modern life available, including numerous sports, recreational and leisure facilities such as an Olympic size swimming pool, a sprawling country park and a nature reserve as well as several business and technology parks.
Aside from the close proximity to Hairmyres Hospital, Orwell Court is also within walking distance of Hairmyres Station, which provides a regular service to Glasgow’s Central Station and the St James Retail Park is also close at hand, offering a choice of retailers, restaurants, cafes, a pharmacy, a dental practice, a hairdresser and a gym.
The development is within easy reach of a good choice of primary and secondary schools, and East Kilbride’s bustling town centre. Home to Scotland’s biggest undercover shopping and leisure location – East Kilbride Shopping Centre provides a substantial choice of leading high street brands, including a Debenhams Department Store, restaurants, an ice rink and a nine screen Odeon cinema complex.
East Kilbride is ideally situated for easy commuting to Glasgow, Hamilton and Edinburgh, with excellent links to the M73, M74, M77 and M8, making the town a popular location for families and young professionals alike.
