Guernsey the star of new ITV1 Series Island Hospital

17th September 2012 Print

There's still time to book an Autumn break in Guernsey - whose leafy lanes, dramatic cliffs and sweeping bays are the scenic backdrop for ITV1's new series Island Hospital, which began transmission last week.

The 12-part series focuses on the stories of the staff and patients at the island’s Princess Elizabeth Hospital, but Guernsey’s landscapes and laid-back lifestyle feature prominently throughout.

Just 24 square miles and accessible in an hour from eight UK airports, Guernsey is the perfect spot for a rejuvenating Autumn break, with 28 miles of scenic clifftop paths and 27 beaches and bays to explore.  Guernsey’s rural interior is easily discovered at a leisurely pace, with a network of 15mph lanes known as ‘Ruettes Tranquilles’ giving priority to cyclists, walkers and horse riders.

Historic and cultural attractions range from ancient burial sites to bays famously painted by Renoir, from the 13th century Castle Cornet to the German coastal fortifications built during the World War II Occupation. And at every turn there are reminders of Guernsey’s distinctive Norman French heritage.

Autumn is also the perfect time to see the bright pink, firework-shaped blooms of the Guernsey Lily.  South African in origin, some say the first Guernsey Lily bulbs were washed ashore from a wrecked Dutch ship; today it blooms in October as other flora starts to fade.

Fly Guernsey (FlyGuernsey.com) is offering three nights for the price of two at the three star Green Acres Hotel throughout October. The offer means that a three night stay will cost from £219 per person, based on two sharing on bed and breakfast basis and including one free night, return flights from London Gatwick, airport parking at Gatwick, and car hire on Guernsey.  Departures from other regional airports are available on request.

Channel Islands Direct (ChannelIslandsDirect.co.uk) is offering three nights at the four star St Pierre Park from just £169 per person. This package is based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, free car hire and ferry travel as a foot passenger from Poole. Travel from London Gatwick from just £229 per person. Valid for travel from 1 November-20 December 2012.
