easyJet launches five new routes from Manchester

11th October 2012 Print

easyJet has announced it will bring an additional aircraft to Manchester Airport on 14 February which will see the airline launch five new routes from the airport.

The move is testament to the airline’s confidence in the region and will create around 80 new cabin crew, pilot and ground handling jobs in Manchester as well as around 250 indirect jobs.

The five new routes include key city break destinations Reykjavik and Venice as well as popular summer sun destinations such as Antalya in Turkey along with the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini. The new routes will help keep North West passengers better connected than ever before with Europe.

The schedule expansion takes the total number of routes easyJet serves at Manchester Airport to 29 across Europe and the Middle East.

easyJet will be increasing the number of planes it bases at the airport from six to seven with the newest Airbus A319 scheduled to begin operations on 14 February 2013.

Ali Gayward, easyJet's UK Commercial Manager, said: "The new aircraft means that we can create much-needed jobs in the region as well as increase the number and variety of routes we are able to operate.

"Our new 2013 schedule will appeal to our leisure passengers who are looking to travel with us on both city breaks and summer sun holidays. They’re destinations we’ve had a lot of requests for, so I’m sure they will prove popular."

Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airports Group (MAG), said: "We’re excited about the pace of growth being delivered by easyJet from Manchester and keen to support their expansion plans over the next few years.

"Since easyJet established a base here in 2008, we have witnessed a rapid rise in passenger numbers and the additional routes added for next summer will be popular choices for customers here in the North."

easyJet only began flights from Manchester in 2008 but since then it has more than trebled its presence at the airport and has flown 4.6 million passengers since its launch.

easyJet now operates 264 flights a week to and from Manchester Airport to destinations including  Amsterdam, Marrakech and Copenhagen. The airline has also recently announced it will begin services between both Basel and Tel Aviv from Manchester this autumn.
