Tongue Fu in association with Get Involved presents: Tongue Fu

20th December 2012 Print

Continuing its reputation for hosting some of the finest talent in spoken word, Tongue Fu kicks off 2013 with performances from veteran comedian and performance poet John Hegley, whose surrealist deadpan take of the dark, the daft and the wonderful have positioned him as one of the nation's favourites. Also on the bill is a brand new work from Tongue Fu founder Chris Redmond and multiple Slam-winning poet Anna Freeman, Hammer and Tongue 2012 UK Champion Adam Kammerling and improvised music and film from the Tongue Fu Band and CR&D.

Mixing spoken word with live music, Tongue Fu adds a new dimension to live poetry with characteristic improvised performance events, produced bi-monthly for Rich Mix. Dressing poetry in hip hop, funk and rock and roll, a live band of expert improvisers beat out a rhythm and soundtrack to the voices of the genre's most accomplished UK artists, in an explosion of word, sound and power. Curated and hosted by poet and musician Chris Redmond, Tongue Fu adds new energy to the live experience of poetry, as band and performers conspire with east London design crew CR&D (making films on the fly), to take spontaneous risks, delivering unique and brilliant live collaborative performances as a result.

A regular night at Rich Mix from humble beginnings above a pub, Tongue Fu has also appeared at Glastonbury, Latitude, The Big Chill, the Barbican and Roundhouse. Founder Chris Redmond is a writer, performer and musician who has been featured on BBC Radio 1, Radio 4 (Pick of The Week), XFM and Sky Arts and is a regular at UK festivals.  He's shared bills with the likes of Ben Okri, Roger McGhough, Scroobius Pip, Portico Quarter and Ed Sheeran.
