Welsh Rarebits – a collection of country house hotels, traditional inns, elegant townhouses, gourmet bolt holes and funky boutique hotels – has invited four new members into the fold for 2013, taking the total number of properties to 44: Manorhaus at Llangollen, Plas Rhianfa at Menai Bridge, Nanteos Mansion near Aberystwyth and Hammet House at Cardigan.

With a 28 year heritage, membership of Welsh Rarebits is strictly by ‘invitation only’ to properties that possess the essential criteria of personal service, comfortable surroundings, excellent food and a warm Welsh ‘Croeso’ (welcome); the result is a unique guide to the very best accommodation to be found throughout Wales.

Manorhaus is a six-bedroomed boutique hotel dating back to 1882, located in the centre of Llangollen with views towards the ancient hilltop fortress of Castell Dinas Brân. The owners’ interest in art and contemporary design is reflected throughout with the clever use of colours, modern design touches and original photography which adorns the bedrooms. The kitchen prepares succinct, fashionable menus, utilising well-chosen combinations of flavours.

Plas Rhianfa is a truly palatial, Grade-II-listed, 16-bedroomed, historical country house hotel located on Anglesey’s Menai Strait, commanding views towards the mountains of Snowdonia. Unashamedly opulent with huge bedrooms and vast public spaces including a formidable drawing room, the hotel features tapestries, portraits, painted ceilings, chandeliers, statues and stained glass windows. Meals are enjoyed in a tall-ceilinged, wood-panelled hall with views over the Menai Strait.

Nanteos Mansion is Grade-I-listed country house hotel, located in a secluded spot just a few miles from the coastal town of Aberystwyth on Wales’s west coast. The 14-bedroomed Georgian house has been lovingly refurbished, lending the property an ambiance more akin to a private country bolthole rather than that of a hotel. The immaculate dining room serves meals which are a fusion of traditional and modern, and Nanteos Mansion also offers self-catering accommodation with guests free to use the hotel’s facilities.

Hammet House is a 14-bedroomed, ‘arty’, luxury hotel offering contemporary comfort and ambiance in a classic setting, overlooking the river Teifi in Cardigan. The young owners have created a true ‘boutique’ feel with modern, retro furnishings and humorous touches whilst retaining the architectural dignity of the Grade-II-listed Georgian property which dates back to 1795. The kitchen prepares well-crafted meals inspired by a bountiful local larder.
