Women the winners in Valentine gift exchange

8th February 2013 Print

Britons are still romantics at heart as the majority of couples (83 per cent) will spend the same, or even more, on gifts for their loved one this Valentine's Day. New research from American Express Platinum Charge Card has found that only 17 per cent of people will cut down on their spend for 14 February compared to 2012.

On average those in relationships will splash out nearly £25 on their partner, with men paying an average of £32 - almost double the £17 that women will part with for Valentine's Day gifts.

The American Express Concierge Team has found that Cardmembers want to celebrate Valentine's Day the traditional way with flowers and restaurants topping the most popular requests. Here are the Concierge Team's top tips on getting impressive Valentine's gifts:

1. Flowers - The Naomi is the best red rose this year. A bouquet of 12 will cost £45 and 6 will come in at £28. For those on a smaller budget, standard red roses to go for are the Freedom, which cost £35 for 12. For those who want to splash the cash, try white roses - either the white Naomi (£75 for 12) or Stolen Kisses (£40 for 12 / £25 for 6).

2. Restaurants - The Concierge Team has noticed a trend of Romeos looking for fun rather than formal dining options this year, with Cardmembers requesting tables at restaurants such as new and contemporary sushi establishments that combine with vibrant music and a lively ambience.

3. Sumptuous treats - Champagne and chocolates remain a traditionally popular symbol of romance. Look out for retailers that have special gift boxes available of pink champagne and truffles from about £40. If your budget is small, add some sparkle with a bottle of Prosecco for around £7, or go for your own personal touch by opting for own-brand champagne or sparkling wine and decorate the labels with photographs of you and your loved one.

4. Theatre Tickets - Love-story musicals such as The Bodyguard and Phantom of the Opera are some of the most popular romantic choices. But if this isn't your bag, special nights such as charity galas and burlesque cabaret shows are also popular choices for a fun and flirty evening.

5. Showstoppers For those pushing the boat out, some of the more show stopping experiences the American Express Concierge Team has organised include helicopter rides across London at sunset, a private tour of the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, an evening with the stars at the Greenwich Royal Observatory and the 1920s themed Valentine Late at the Museum of London.
