Retrace the British Museum’s Pompeii exhibition back to Italy

27th February 2013 Print

The much-awaited exhibition ‘Life and death in Pompeii and Herculaneum’ runs from 28 March – 29 September at the British Museum in London.

First see the exhibition; then visit the sites for yourself, with cultural and archaeological tours specialist Peter Sommer Travels. Cruising the Amalfi Coast explores the region’s archaeological highlights, whilst travelling aboard a traditional wooden gulet – the only tour of its kind.

Rather than skimming the surface or flicking through a guide book, actually get to grips with Pompeii – one of the most spectacular and complete archaeological sites in the world – and visit the site with an expert. Italian-speaking guide and archaeologist, Dr. Michael Metcalfe, leads this cultural escorted tour, sharing his expertise from the various archaeological projects that he has worked on in the eastern Mediterranean.

Limited to just ten guests, the tour explores the ruins of Pompeii, with Dr. Metcalfe leading the group around the forum, the amphitheatre, temples and many of the houses and villas. Learning about the city’s ill-fated history and visiting the lesser-known areas, too, the group will also stop for a delightful picnic lunch amongst the ruins.

Aside from Pompeii, there’s plenty to see; explore Naples and its world-famous archaeological museum, admire Roman frescoes at the Villa Oplontis, soak up the atmosphere in Capri, stroll through pretty Positano and cruise to the ancient Roman seaside resort of Baia, visiting the town’s beautiful Imperial villa. Aboard the well-appointed wooden gulet, relax on deck with a book, admire impressive Mt. Vesuvius from the shelter of a secluded anchorage, sit down to delicious meals under shady canopies and enjoy refreshing dips in the Mediterranean.

Departing 8 June, 7 September and 14 September 2013, Cruising the Amalfi Coast costs from £3,595 pp (two sharing) including transfers, seven nights’ full-board accommodation on an elegant and well-equipped gulet, all entrance fees, excursions and the services of two expert guides.
