Horse-riding tours in the Azores

8th April 2013 Print

Specialist operator Archipelago Choice has introduced a collection of dedicated horse-riding packages on the main island of São Miguel in the Azores.

Already a popular destination for walkers and birdwatchers, the extensive network of trails and timeworn farming tracks in the Azores also make the islands ideal for horse-riding.

Archipelago Choice has always featured horse-riding as an optional activity in the Azores; however, due to an increasing demand from guests for a stand alone package, the operator has used its exceptional knowledge of the Azores and combined it with their experience of the activity to develop three new dedicated horse-riding packages for the first time.

The itineraries have been created to ensure that novice, intermediate and experienced riders alike are able to enjoy the tours. The collection offers guests the opportunity to choose the amount of expert tuition and riding time they would like.

The tours range from a leisurely 10 hours of riding, leaving plenty of time for guests to combine their trip with other interests, such as walking or whale-watching, to an intensive trip which is perfect for improving technique.

The Light week costs from £1170pp and includes 10 hours of riding, which can either be taken as riding lessons, full-day rides or half-day rides. The price also includes B&B accommodation, seven days’ car hire, a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip, flights and a pre-departure information booklet.

The Medium week costs from £1297pp and includes one full day and four half-days of riding. The price also includes B&B accommodation, five lunches and four dinners, a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip, flights, airport transfers and a pre-departure information booklet.

The Full week costs from £1428pp and includes three full days and two half-days of riding, plus a one-hour lesson. The price also includes B&B accommodation, five lunches and four dinners, a three-hour whale and dolphin watching trip, flights, airport transfers and a pre-departure information booklet.

The new tours use the stables at the 17th Century manor house, Quinta da Terça, as the base for exploring the island. The house is also where guests will stay for the duration of their trip.

Horses are pure and cross-bred Lusitano horses and facilities include a covered riding arena (picadeiro) with a large open fireplace and a bar, built in the same beautiful Portuguese style as the manor house.

Archipelago Choice is able to provide separate activity itineraries for non-riding partners or friends.
