Love-struck brides-to-be are so desperate to bag their dream engagement ring that they will chip in for it themselves, a survey has revealed. Researchers found that a third of women said they were determined to get the ring they had always longed for, and would go to any lengths to get it.

As well as coughing up herself, begging and pleading their fiancé until they gave in was another tactic in bagging ‘a rock’.

One in five would even compromise, promising not to have a big, expensive wedding if they were presented with the perfect diamond ring.

The poll by luxury jewellery firm Taylor&Co found that some women even admitted to throwing a wobbler after their man popped the question because they wanted a better ring.

In fact, 10% of all couples admitted they had crossed words during the ring buying process.

Sara Taylor founder of Taylor&Co said: ”Choosing an engagement ring should be a magical time for couples.

”Some men choose an engagement ring themselves to pop the question, but others realise that it can be an expensive mistake if you get it wrong so involve their fiancé in the selection process.

”It’s understandable that some girls have their heart set on a certain style of ring, so it’s easy to see how there can be disputes.

”But it’s important to remember the reason why you are purchasing a ring in the first place.

”It seems a shame if couples are getting to the point where they argue.”

One in twenty of the girls polled thought a man should spend more than one month’s salary on an engagement ring, with a third saying that this was about the right amount.

A humble 58% said they thought a month’s salary was too much to fork out on a ring.

Of the 1000 men and 1000 women polled, 27% of men said the cost of a ring was important.

When quizzed on whether they should spend a month’s salary, 32% said they thought that was about right, but a massive 61% said that was too much.

Only a generous 6% said they didn’t think that would be enough to buy the ring of their girlfriend’s dreams.

A whopping 88% of men were in agreement that women could be demanding when it comes to the type of engagement ring they want – but 13% went as far as to say that a girl had been ungrateful when they had presented them with an engagement ring.

The poll found that on average, women thought £1360 was what a man should spend on a ring to pop the question.

But surprisingly, men thought it was slightly more at £1531.

Two thirds of females said the more a man earns the more he should spend, and 23% said that the more a man spends the more he loves you.

Sara Taylor of Taylor&Co added: ”Couples shouldn’t focus too much on the cost of an engagement ring but it’s important you choose a style that suits you and your own taste and that will stand the test of time.

”All being well you will be wearing it for the rest of your life.”
