One-in-five Brits (20 per cent) believe the nervous Great Dane Scooby-Doo is the greatest canine or feline movie character of all time, according to research from Direct Line pet insurance. The top-cat, was not in fact Top Cat, but Garfield, with 16 per cent choosing the ginger tom as their favourite.

Scooby was more popular amongst men (27 per cent) than women (14 per cent) and with slightly older generations, with nearly a third (30 per cent) of those aged 35-54 selecting Scooby, compared to 17 per cent of those aged 18-34. The Antonio Banderas voiced Puss in Boots is the younger generation's favourite, with 22 per cent stating he was their number one.

Most chose famous dogs and cats with the exception of Gizmo, the infamous cute Gremlin. Some pet owners were even more creative with one cat owner calling their pet ‘Leonardo Di Catrio' after the actor Leonardo DiCaprio."
