October tops travel spend league table

2nd October 2013 Print

Travellers are shunning the traditional peak holiday season to make October the busiest month for cash withdrawals abroad, according to figures from Norwich & Peterborough Building Society.

The mutual, which offers free use abroad on its debit cards, has revealed that more overseas ATM withdrawals were made by its customers in October than any other month last year.

In total, 10.0% of all overseas ATM withdrawals last year were made in October, compared to 9.0% in August. Perhaps unsurprisingly, January was the month with the lowest number of withdrawals at just 6.2%.

The most popular destinations for N&P customers last October were (in order of number of ATM withdrawals): Spain, France, Australia, United States, Thailand, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Greece and India.

Ewan Edwards, N&P's Head of Current Accounts, said: "You usually think about August as the main holiday season but last year most withdrawals abroad by our customers were made in October.

"It suggests that those travellers able to take a holiday during the school term are happy to sacrifice a couple of degrees of heat to make the most of off-season prices."

N&P's Gold Classic Visa debit card is fee-free so customers pay no charges for cash withdrawal, retail transactions or handling fees, when they use it abroad. Some overseas ATMs may add a charge which customers are notified of at the time.

As well as free debit card use abroad, N&P Gold Classic current account customers receive a range of benefits at no cost, including access to exclusive savings products with preferential rates, Sentinel Gold cover and discounted share dealing costs as long as at least £500 is paid in to the account every month. New customers also benefit from a six-month interest free £250 overdraft limit when they use N&P's switching service to transfer their bank account.
