‘Twerking’, ‘amazeballs’ and ‘moist’ officially among most hated words - ‘wazzock’ and ‘haberdashery’ among loved

‘Twerking’, ‘amazeballs’ and ‘moist’ were named and shamed as words we hate – while ‘beer’, ‘snuggle’ and ‘wazzock’ are ones we love. Others words – of the non-expletive type – which are guaranteed to make us squirm include the common teen retort ‘whatever’, the over-used ‘basically’ and the slightly more unpleasant ‘piddle’.

The list, which emerged followed a detailed study carried out among 2,000 adults, revealed as many modern words as old fashioned ones regularly make us bristle.

‘Banter’, ‘random’ and ‘totes’ which have all become commonplace over the last ten years or so, were among those in the modern category which we dislike while ‘doily’, ‘plop’ and ‘piddle’ are words which have been around for longer.

By contrast words which we like are ‘bubble’, ‘rambunctious’ and ‘aardvark’.

A spokesman for paid survey site, OnePoll, which commissioned the study, said: ”We never imagined the nation would find such mainstream words so frustrating.

”Quite often we find ourselves using these words automatically in sentences every day without realising we could be frustrating our friends, family or colleagues.

”It was refreshing however to see we love words such as ‘jolly’, ‘snuggle’ and ‘plump’. Some words really roll off the tongue and its nice to have words in our language we enjoy saying.”

A total of 500 words were put forward in total, of which researchers published the top 25 of each.

Among other most hated words were ‘anaesthetic’, probably because it is difficult to spell and has serious medical connotations and ‘violate’ perhaps because of its link to all things criminal.

‘Snogging’, ‘discharge’, ‘oregano’, ‘re-deploy’, ‘bespoke’ and ‘prejudice’ are also not a flavour of the moment.

‘Couch’, ‘bromance’ and ‘blancmange’ also made the hated list as did ‘mental’, ‘nugget’, ‘anomaly’, ‘cusp’, ‘ointment’, ‘flow’, ‘rasher’ and ‘gesticulate’.

The respondents were also asked to put forward names which they enjoy reeling off.

Among these were ‘circumnavigate’, ‘discombobulate’ and ‘hippopotamus’, while love was also expressed for ‘raindrop’, ‘sprocket’, ‘plump’, wazzock’, ‘thingamabob’, ‘badger’ and ‘bundle’.

Other words which fall into the favoured category were ‘exacerbate’, ‘plethora’, ‘osmosis’, ‘bobble’, ‘jolly’ and haberdashery.

Apparently we are also comfortable saying words such as ‘beer’, ‘juxtaposition’, ‘onomatopoeia’, ‘peninsula’, ‘snuggle’ and ‘penultimate’.

Other favoured words were ‘gusto’, ‘knickerbockerglory’, ‘articulate’, ‘taboo’, ‘dinghy’ and ‘moreish’.

We also like ‘quintessential’, ‘desire’, ‘rhyme’, ‘rhythm’, ‘rhetoric’, ‘sporadically’, ‘harmony’ and cosy.

The top 50 liked list was completed by ‘encapsulate’, ‘butter’, ‘super’ and ‘intrigue’.

The spokesman for paid survey site, OnePoll, added: ”Maybe if people take note of this list they’ll be a bit more conscious of words they use from this point onwards, now aware of how much the nation hates certain terms such as ‘amazeballs’, ‘random’ and ‘totes’.

”Similarly, hopefully the list of most loved words will spring the public into action and ensure we use these words more on a daily basis.”
