Motorists looking to sell their car for scrap will earn more money if they live in the North West than in any other part of the country, according to exclusive figures released by vehicle removal specialist Remove My Car.

The average price quoted for a scrap car in the North West is at a UK high of £160.49, compared to other parts of the country such as East England, where motorists will only receive on average, £74.37 for their vehicle.

In fact, the further east of the UK you go, the lower the average quote you will receive for your scrap car, with Wales recording a national average of just £75.20. Motorists from the Midlands can receive an average of £142.38 for their car while motorists selling for scrap in the North East can benefit from the high average price of £150.40.

Remove My Car worked out the average price of vehicles that went through its scrap network in each region of the UK between January and November this year. The average prices take into consideration any fluctuations that occurred within the scrap metal industry during this time.

Steve Queen, owner of Remove My Car explains why prices differ depending on where in the UK you plan on selling your car for scrap. “The price you receive for your car when selling it for scrap depends on a number of issues. We value every vehicle by its weight instead of its size in order to provide an accurate quotation, but we then have to consider the logistics of picking a car up for scrap and using local Authorised Treatment Facilities.”

Whenever a vehicle is scrapped it must be taken away by an accredited Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF.) These comply with ELV (End of Life Vehicle) and environmental permitting regulations and are regularly audited to ensure they are disposing of and recycling ELVs in an environmentally friendly manner. Depending on the competition of ATF sites in a particular area of the UK, average prices for scrap cars can greatly differ.

Steve Queen continued: “You don’t need us to tell you that the cost of fuel has risen dramatically in recent years and this has a direct impact on all types of collection and delivery services. The high cost of fuel means that dealers have to balance the cost of picking up a car for scrap against the potential value of the car as scrap or salvage. This also takes into account the cost of transporting the processed metals after a car has been recycled so it can turn into a costly process.

“If you live in a city that has a lot of scrap dealers, you will receive a better price for your car. The scrap car industry is very competitive and, in towns where there are many dealers and car parts specialists, you can earn a bit more money for your scrap car.”

Savvy motorists considering moving their car into another region of the UK in pursuit of a higher quote are being advised that it is rarely worth the extra costs incurred.Steve Queen added: “Unless you can get your car into a more competitive location without incurring lots of petrol costs it is rarely worth the effort. A lot of end of life vehicles are no longer roadworthy and often this is why the owner is seeking a price for scrap. It would be plain dangerous to try and put a car like this on the road and try to move it to another location and transporting it yourself via a pick up truck only incurs even further additional costs.”
