A leading builder is to create a new housing development in a south Durham town on the site of a derelict pub which has now been demolished.

Persimmon Homes Teesside has been given planning persimmon to build 37 new homes at Canney Hill, on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland.

The developer will create a new community with two, three and four-bedroom homes to suit a cross-section of buyers, from growing families to downsizers and first-time buyers.

The development will be built on the site of the former Sportman’s Pub, between Durham Road and the A688 near Coundongate.

Neil Foster, managing director for Persimmon Homes Teesside, said: “Canney Hill is a beautiful area and we intend to keep it that way. We will be introducing a wide range of new builds all designed to fit the needs of the community and the local area.

“It is a great location with the thriving market town of Bishop Auckland nearby with its great shops and leisure facilities. The new development at Canney Hill will be the perfect addition to the Persimmon Homes family.”

The market town has great commuter links being 12 miles from both Darlington and Durham on the confluence of the River Wear and the River Gaunless. The town boasts the historic Auckland Castle, which has been the official residence of the Bishop of Durham since 1832. However, its history goes back much earlier, as it was built as a hunting lodge for the Prince Bishops of Durham.

Househunters can also take advantage of such schemes as the Government-backed Help to Buy and Part Exchange. Help to Buy provides a 20% loan on the term of a mortgage, which is interest and repayment free for the first five years. People only need a 5% deposit.

Mr Foster added: “Help to Buy is a fantastic scheme that really helps people get on or move up the property ladder. It is available across the vast majority of our developments and is for first time and next time buyers and there is no salary cap.

“We also offer Part Exchange, which can really help people make a quick move. If you are eligible for Part Exchange, we arrange at least two valuations, agree a market price and buy your existing property. We aim to take the stress out of moving as there are no hidden marketing costs and no chains to break.”
