Relive the Sochi spirit in La Plagne

5th March 2014 Print

You’ve admired the Alpine skiing, found yourself glued to the giant slalom, been scared stiff by the skeleton and marvelled at the moguls, but now the closing ceremony’s been and gone, and the Winter Olympics are over for another four years.

However, there’s still plenty going on in the winter-sport world this season. So, with Sochi off the screens, keep the winter sport spirit going with these three experiences in the French ski resort of La Plagne (open until 26 April):

Moguls and Ski Cross World Cup Finals

In March, the top international athletes – including medal winners fresh from the Olympics – will head to La Plagne for the Moguls and Ski Cross World Cup Finals (19-23 March). Visit La Plagne during the competition, watch some of the action and soak up the post-Olympic atmosphere at the 2014 competition which, for the first time, will include an exciting ‘Big Air’ final.

Arriving 19 March, four nights’ B&B accommodation costs from €160 pp (two sharing) – approx. £132 pp. Travel extra.

Shred It with Sochi bronze medallist Kevin Rolland

Join born-and-bred Plagnard and Sochi bronze medallist Kevin Rolland in La Plagne for Shred It (24-25 March) – a mini winter sports festival complete with competitions, activities and displays. Kevin will be joined by 20 international freeskiers – all halfpipe, slopestyle and backcountry experts – for the informal event which will see him introducing fellow skiers to his home slopes.

Arriving 23 March, three nights’ half-board accommodation costs from €180 pp (two sharing) – approx. £148 pp. Travel extra.

Ride an Olympic bobsleigh

Built for the 1992 Albertville Olympics, La Plagne’s 1.5km-long bobsleigh track – complete with 19 hair-raising bends – is the only one in France. For the ultimate thrill, try bob racing – the closest you’ll get to experiencing the Olympic sport. Sit behind a professional driver and zip along the ice at 120km/hour. Two slower options exist: the self-driving Bob Raft (for families) and the Speed Luge (for solo riders).

A bob racing descent costs €115 pp – approx. £95 pp. A week’s stay in March in a four-person studio costs from €844 total or €211 pp (four sharing) – approx. £174 pp. Travel extra.
