Savvy Scots make biggest savings

27th March 2014 Print

Scots are the most reward savvy consumers in the UK, saving an average of £1,019 per year, according to research commissioned by American Express.

By using rewards and special offers including price discounts, store cards, online vouchers, multibuys, credit and charge cards, restaurant deals and location check-in rewards, Scottish consumers are making more of the offers available to them than consumers in the rest of the UK.

Those living in the North West save on average £606 a year and Londoners recoup just over £700 through rewards and offers. This compares to a national average of £742 per annum.

When it comes to using credit and charge card rewards, Scots save an average of £141 each year. This is more than in any other part of the UK and double the £70 saved by those from Yorkshire and the Humber.

Heather Laverne, Vice President of Consumer Cards UK at American Express, said: “Brits can make significant savings when they take advantage of the wide range of everyday rewards and offers available. For those who want to ensure they get the most from their spending, they could consider a credit or charge card that gives them something back. With American Express we offer customers the choice of collecting frequent flyer and loyalty points or receiving cashback which means you can which means you can save while you spend.”

The research, conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research on behalf of American Express, reveals that taking advantage of rewards and special offers has become an integral part of family budgeting and are here to stay. Only three per cent of consumers believe rewards will become less important over the next five years.
