Local homebuyers have been taking the opportunity to snap up a brand new home through the Government’s ‘Help to Buy’ equity loan scheme.

The scheme, which enables them to purchase a new-build property with just a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage, has sparked a surge in demand.

Yet a recent survey found that many would-be buyers remain confused as to how the scheme actually works.

Barratt Homes North East will have all the answers at a dedicated Help to Buy event at The Elms in Norton over the May Bank Holiday weekend (3 - 5 May).

The housebuilder has now sold more than 200 homes through Help to Buy across the region and Sales Director Fenton Hewitt says the scheme is undoubtedly giving a real boost to the local housing market.

He said: “It is proving extremely popular, yet there are some misconceptions, for example, that it is only for first-time buyers when in fact it’s available for existing homeowners as well.

“The magic of the scheme is that buyers only need a 75 per cent mortgage.

“This means they can get a loan at a lower interest rate, which in turn means monthly payments are much cheaper.

“The Government will lend buyers the remaining 20 per cent, with no interest to pay on that for five years.

“This not only benefits first-time buyers but also ‘second steppers’ already on the property ladder. It’s a terrific opportunity to buy a bigger home with a smaller mortgage.”

Homes available at The Elms include the three-bedroom ‘Aylesbury’ design, which offers 800 sq ft of living space.

It has a light and airy living / dining room, with French windows opening into the back garden, and a contemporary fitted kitchen. Upstairs are three well-proportioned bedrooms together with the family bathroom.

The property has energy-efficient heating and double glazing plus the exclusive Barratt five-year guarantee on fixtures and fittings.

Prices start from £129,995, which means purchasers using Help to Buy would need a deposit of £6,500.

The Elms is in a quiet setting next to the golf course, yet within easy reach of amenities and well-located for commuting to Stockton, Middlesbrough and other centres.

There are three showhomes open daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm. For details, visit barratthomes.co.uk/theelms.
