Five dates, three movies and five phone-calls - before a woman takes things to the bedroom

The average single girl is not prepared to have sex with a new partner until the fifth date, new research has revealed. A study carried out among 2,000 adults – split 50/50 between male and female – found the typical woman will enjoy four dates to judge the suitability of a potential new boyfriend.

It also emerged these dates involve the ticking off of a ten-point checklist, which involves soul-searching questions such as ‘Is he trustworthy?’, ‘Do we click?’ and ‘Can he make me laugh?’

The study also found a woman will expect 12 text conversations, five long phone chats and ideally a bunch of flowers before considering taking things further.

Watching three films, seven passionate kisses and sharing four meals together are also likely to have taken place before things become more intimate.

The study was commissioned by Singles247.com.

Spokeswoman Tina West said: “Everyone is different and will have different ideas about when to sleep with someone for the first time.

“What this survey shows is that attitudes are changing and women are being ever more choosy, and keeping guys waiting longer than in the past.

“Although you may realise there is chemistry between you and someone else early on, getting to know someone well does take time, and more and more women are holding out before they allow a man to go to bed with them.”

The study also found a woman will assess whether her potential suitor is a gentleman, if he’ll stick around after things progress to the bedroom and whether he will make her feel comfortable about her body.

And she’s also looking out for warning signs that he wants to get intimate too quickly or that they might get too clingy afterwards.

Worryingly, the stats showed four in ten people had slept with a partner too soon and seen things decline because of it.

But despite the ongoing decision process in the early days of dating, it takes women a lot less time to decide if they like someone on the first date – one in ten know instantly if someone is for them or not.

And nearly half have made up their minds on a person 10 minutes into a first date, results showed.

The biggest dating turn offs were body odour and lack of chemistry, while catching the man looking at other women while on the date was a cardinal sin.

Rudeness towards bar or restaurant staff will also draw a black mark, while being a poor listener, talking about exes and seeming needy will all have women asking for the bill.

Tina West added: “Women are also expecting to be woo-ed by text nowadays, and for their man to put his hand in his pocket for at least two meals.

“Whether you think five dates like this research shows is now the norm, or whether you hold off for longer, women are getting to realise they hold the upper hand in making the decision to sleep with someone or not.”
