Hundreds of thousands of people due to retire in 2014 are planning on supporting their families to the tune of £3,000-a-year, a study by Prudential has found.

Covering everyday living expenses is the most common reason given by retirees for helping out their family, with 14 per cent providing cash for essentials like food and travel, while 11 per cent hand over money for luxuries like holidays, new cars or televisions.

Viridian’s latest development at Parkside in the centre of Cheam Village, Surrey is exclusively for buyers aged 55 and over and is perfect for older people looking to release some cash in their retirement. This collection of 45 one and two bedroom apartments is available through outright purchase and shared ownership, with buyers able to purchase from a 60% share of their new home.

Felicity Gentle, Development Sales and Marketing Manager of Viridian Housing comments: “The homes at Parkside offer the ideal opportunity for pensioners to raise money so they can look after their families in their retirement. This growing trend means they can sell their current property to release equity and buy a new apartment outright, or they can purchase through shared ownership to free up cash to enable them to spend their money how they wish.”

Surrounded by mature oak and sycamore trees that characterise the area and provide a strong link to the park, the development features four distinct apartment buildings and has been designed to reflect the attractive timber framed, weather boarded properties in the village.

Parkside comprises of four apartment buildings configured around Mickleham Gardens, which is accessed off Malden Road. The architecture is traditional in style, with features including gables and pitched roofs with dormer windows.

Added interest is provided through a range of exterior finishes including brick, render, weather-boarding and wooden balustrades, with many apartments benefitting from a private balcony or patio area.

Every apartment at Parkside offers a high quality interior specification with a strong emphasis on low maintenance and sustainability. Each has also been ‘future proofed’ with a range of features designed to allow longer term occupation. On-site car parking is available to rent by separate arrangement.

Parkside, situated in the centre of Cheam Village, is located adjacent to Cheam Park, the grounds of a former 19th Century mansion, boasts expansive areas of green space. It’s a great place for walking and cycling, whilst the David Lloyd leisure centre nearby, has a gym, swimming pool and offers a range of exercise classes to keep fit. Residents can enjoy the amenities the village has to offer, including high street retailers, independent shops and a good choice of cafes and restaurants.

Cheam Recreation Ground is less than 500 metres from Parkside and boasts four tennis courts, an outdoor gym, a café and pavilion with changing rooms and showers. There’s also a croquet and bowling green, which is home to Cheam Croquet & Bowls Club.

Parkside is located within walking distance of Cheam railway station where services to London Victoria take around half an hour. Buses are frequent and provide services to the surrounding towns of Sutton, Epsom, Kingston and Croydon.

With 60% reserved off plan there is only a limited number of properties still available. Prices start at £198,000 for a one bedroom apartment and from £270,000 for a two bedroom apartment. Some apartments are available through shared ownership at 60% of the full purchase price so purchasers can secure a one bedroom apartment from £118,800 and a two bedroom apartment from £162,000.
