A new and unique Northern Lights experience: Heated Aurora Sleighs

4th June 2014 Print

The Aurora Zone is launching a new form of Aurora hunting this winter in the tiny and remote village of Nellim in Finnish Lapland – heated Aurora Sleighs.

Pulled by snowmobiles, the snug sleds – complete with heating, comfy seating and transparent walls and roof – allow guests to be transported through the Arctic wilderness, to admire the night sky in style (and warmth) from the back of a moving sleigh.

Embark on an Aurora Sleigh Safari and travel in one of these Northern Lights-viewing cocoons 250km north of the Arctic Circle which, deep in the light pollution-free wilderness, is home to many fantastic vantage points. Here, in the midst of a frozen lake, you’ll be served warm berry juice. Alternatively, opt for the sleigh ride and a romantic dinner à deux at an Aurora Camp on Lake Inari. Travelling to and from the camp by sled, enjoy a delicious three-course meal around an open fire in this intimate and mesmerising setting.

“We’ve been wracking our brains to come up with a solution to one of the most common problems associated with hunting for the Northern Lights – the cold,” comments Alistair McLean, Founder of The Aurora Zone. “All too often we are asked whether there’s a way of seeing the Aurora Borealis whilst remaining warm, despite being deep within the Arctic Circle. Well, here’s the solution: it’s private, it’s intimate, it’s fun and, best of all, it’s warm.”

Last year, The Aurora Zone launched the highly-popular Aurora Bubbles – heated pods – and these brand-new heated Aurora Sleighs follow a similar concept, with the added – and considerable – bonus of being transported around (in comfort and warmth) whilst scanning the night sky, in search of the Northern Lights.

Sample Package:

An active Aurora in the Wild trip to Nellim costs from £2,090 pp (two sharing) including flights (London), transfers, six nights’ full-board accommodation, all activities including cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, husky safari, a day with a reindeer herder and Northern Lights hunts, plus cold-weather clothing.
