Summer activity break to the French Pyrenees

L’Ancienne Poste is a luxurious mountain lodge located in the village of Avajan in the French Pyrenees which is owned and run by Englishman James Dealtry, the first ever non-French national to be employed by the Ski Ecole Francaise.

James bought the lodge – which used to be the village post office – three years ago and, with no expense spared, converted it into a luxurious lodge which is now the perfect base for ski holidays in winter and mountain activity breaks in the summer months.

For summer 2014, James has put together a special five-night ‘summer action activity break’, available on 12 July, 23 August and 13 September.

Many of the activities are led by James himself (he is also a qualified rock climbing instructor) and the packed itinerary includes a guided walk to waterfalls with a picnic and swim, an afternoon spent on a tree top assault course, riding the rapids (canyoning or rafting), an introduction to rock climbing with a qualified instructor, kayaking on a lake and a downhill scooter session.

Close to the lodge is the Balnea Spa, one of the best known public spas in France and the itinerary includes an afternoon there (or a visit to an outdoor pool).

The spa has luxurious waterfalls, hot tubs, Jacuzzi, saunas, steam rooms, cold water plunge pools, indoor hot tubs, outdoor hot pools and swimming pools.

Other treatments which can be booked at a supplement include massages, mud baths and face packs.

In keeping with the high standard of accommodation at L’Ancienne Poste, evening meals are of the ‘fine dining’ variety, prepared using local ingredients wherever possible by the talented in-house chef.

The five night summer activity holiday costs from £599 pp (two sharing) which includes flights, transfers, activities and five nights’ half board (with wine and beer).

Flights are not included but the area is well served by three main airports Pau, Lourdes-Tarbes, and Toulouse and can be accessed using low cost airlines such as Easyjet or Ryanair plus other airlines including British Airways.
