LV= travel insurance will cover Brits waiting for their passports

12th June 2014 Print

As the Passport Office is facing an unprecedented backlog of passport applications, thousands of Brits are unable to travel as they are waiting for their new passport to arrive. Many will have to cancel their holidays as a result and lose any money they have paid out.

Travel insurance would not normally cover holidaymakers who are unable to travel out of the UK due to not having a passport, as passport applications are usually processed in a matter of weeks. However, as this is a situation beyond the holidaymaker’s control, LV= travel insurance is stepping in to ensure its customers do not lose out.

Selwyn Fernandes, Managing Director of LV= travel insurance, said: “We would usually expect a new passport to be processed within a matter of a few weeks, not months. This is an unprecedented situation where thousands of Brits will not be able to travel due to delays at the Passport Office, even if they made their application in good time. We don’t believe this is fair, so existing LV= customers will be covered.”

To make a claim, LV= travel insurance customers will need to provide information confirming that they have been waiting for over 12 weeks for their passport to be processed.
