Hotel creates Lakes & Haiku version of Blackpool’s Comedy Carpet

The Lake District’s version of Blackpool’s Comedy Carpet will be created on Tuesday, July 15, when Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel lays on its Haiku at the Howe day, displaying entries to a haiku competition that has attracted international attention.

The hotel – a former property owned by author Beatrix Potter – has added to its literary heritage this year by creating a haiku competition. This has asked children aged 7 to 11 to pen a five-line poem, in the traditional Japanese style of haiku, summing up what they like about the Lake District.

On the afternoon of July 15 (12 noon to 3pm) the hotel will display enlarged copies of the entries on the lawns of its 6-acre gardens and allow entrants, teachers and parents to view the children’s entries.

A special lunch menu and afternoon tea will also be laid on at a 30 per cent discount.

The winning entry will be revealed and a prize presented to the winner, if in attendance, at 2pm. The winner scoops a special trophy, a Beatrix Potter book and a cuddly toy of Pigling Bland – a character created at Lindeth Howe from where Beatrix Potter penned and illustrated both ‘The Tale of Pigling Bland’ and ‘The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes’.

The Haiku at the Howe contest has coincided with Dove Cottage’s ‘Wordsworth and Basho: Walking Poets’ exhibition, which celebrates Basho’s haiku. The competition has been co-judged by employees from The Wordsworth Trust.

Lindeth Howe’s marketing manager, Clare Bateman, says: “We have had some super entries to the Haiku at the Howe contest and are delighted with the enthusiasm of the young poets who have entered. We have picked a worthy winner and all will be revealed on July 15.”
