Local hero inspires new homes’ development name

Redrow is honouring a First World War hero from Marden by naming its latest Kent development in his memory.

The award-winning housebuilder has planning permission to build three, four and five-bedroom homes on land formerly occupied by the MAP (Marden Apple Packers) Depot off Gouldhurst Road.

The company has decided to name the development Highwood Green after local man Captain Sidney Highwood.

Kerry Jenkins, sales director for Redrow Homes (South East), says: “Captain Highwood was an RAF veteran known as a ‘balloon buster’ thanks to his role in securing aerial victories over enemy observation balloons during the First World War. He’s nothing short of a local hero and as 2014 marks a century since the war began we felt it was a fitting tribute to name our Marden development in his honour.”

Along with the properties, Redrow will be creating a play trail, allotments and landscaped open space, new cycle parking facilities in the village and a bus stop next to the development.

Initially the homes will be sold ‘off plan’ from Ward & Partners, High Street, Staplehurst. The estate agent is holding a special preview event for prospective purchasers on July 26.

“Highwood Green will provide new homes for local people,” Kerry says.

“We expect the properties to be popular and are inviting prospective purchasers to register their interest now so that they can be kept informed of our progress.”

It’s not just the name of the development that gives a nod to the past. The homes at Highwood Green will feature traditional Arts & Crafts inspired architecture to complement existing properties in the surrounding area. In keeping with the Kent vernacular they will display features such as white render, tile hangings and weather boarding.

Inside, however, they will be bright and modern with a high specification as standard. Kitchens will be well equipped with integrated top brand name appliances, while bathrooms and en-suites will enjoy quality fixtures and fittings.

Just eight miles from Maidstone, Marden is a charming village and home to a selection of traditional shops including a butcher, grocer and post office.

The local railway station is just a 10 minute walk from the new homes, offering direct trains to London Bridge and Charing Cross in around an hour.
