Commonwealth Games: Hotel Prices Increase by over £200

Hotel prices in Glasgow have risen to an average of £344 during the Commonwealth Games (23rd July to 4th August). This is a 158 per cent increase in comparison to the previous week, when one night costs an average of £133. In July 2013 one night in Glasgow cost an average of just £78.

The most expensive night to book is Sunday 27th July, when an overnight stay will cost an average of £448. On this day Hampden Park stadium will make its debut appearance following a £14 million refurbishment, in order to host the first Athletic events. This includes the men’s 5000 metres, which Mo Farah is rumoured to compete in.

The largest increase in travel interest to Glasgow was in May, when hotel searches increased by 104 per cent in comparison to April. In June searches increased by a further 13 per cent. Unsurprisingly, hotel availability will drop by 75 per cent during the event.

Based on the 50 most popular European summer resort destinations on trivago.co.uk, hotel prices have increased by an average of 23 per cent in comparison to last month. One night in July will cost an average of £120, compared to £97 in June.

The largest increase can be found in Ibiza’s Playa d’en Bossa, where hotel prices have doubled in comparison to last month. One night in July will cost an average of £248, compared to £123 in June. Other significant increases can be found in Mykonos Town (up 72 per cent to £258), Salou and Alcudia (both up 51 per cent to £136 and £142, respectively).

Based on the most popular UK summer destinations, hotel prices have increased by up to 19 per cent in comparison to last month. The largest increase can be found in Torquay, where prices have increased from an average of £81 during June to £96 during July.

Denise Bartlett, UK Public Relations: “With most schools due to break up next week and university semesters long finished, it is unsurprising to see hotel prices soar in European summer resorts popular amongst British holidaymakers. The most surprising destination is Mykonos Town, where hotel prices have increased by 51 per cent year-on-year. At an average of £258 per night during July, it is the most expensive destination this summer (based on the 50 most popular summer destinations amongst UK users). With summer hotel prices in the UK increasing by a maximum of just 19 per cent and a heatwave due to hit soon, perhaps holidaymakers would be better off opting for the ‘Staycation’ option this summer.”
