Leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has officially unveiled the name of its brand new development in Launceston, Cornwall.

The name Gwel An Hay – which means ‘The Enclosure Field’ in Cornish – was selected following consultation with local organisations including MAGA - the Cornish Language Partnership, local councillors, a local historian, the Old Cornwall Society and the Town Council.

Gwel An Hay will comprise a stunning selection of 70 two, three and four-bedroom homes at Hay Common to the south of Launceston.

The development will form part of a wider new development of around 300 new homes as well as a new primary school, a family pub and public open space and will also bring highway improvements to the area, including a new roundabout junction off Tavistock Road.

Taylor Wimpey received planning permission for the first phase of homes on 3rd July and work is due to start on site shortly.

Janine Copleston, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “As a local housebuilder, we understand that Cornish place names have a special place in the hearts of local people.

“We want our new developments to become a real part of their local community, so that is why we were keen to choose a Cornish name for our brand new collection of homes in Launceston, which will create much-needed new homes for local people.”

Nev Meek, Chairman of the Place-Name and Street Signage Panel of MAGA the Cornish Language Partnership, which is hosted by Cornwall Council, says: “It is fantastic that Taylor Wimpey have chosen a Cornish name for this development which preserves an important element of our culture.”

Nestled on the southern edge of Launceston, Gwel An Hay benefits from an ideal location close to some of Cornwall’s most striking countryside yet remaining within easy reach of Launceston’s shops and leisure facilities.

Prospective purchasers can register for updates about the development online at taylorwimpey.co.uk.
