Monarch airlines reports festive mobile bookings boost

31st December 2014 Print

Monarch saw overall mobile bookings rise over the festive season. Mobile bookings made on Christmas day were up 32% year-on-year and 80% year-on-year for Boxing Day bookings.

With tablets and smart phones popular presents this year, Monarch saw mobile traffic and use of its mobile app, which now has over 194,000 downloads, jump on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Overall on Christmas Day and Boxing Day traffic was up 40% from last year’s figures.

Monarch has also seen positive demand for its new winter routes from London Gatwick to Lyon (France), Birmingham to Turin (Italy) and Salzburg (Switzerland). With the snow now falling in the Alps, all three new routes are perfect destinations for customers wanting to hit the slopes during the winter holidays.

Although the snow is falling, the drop in temperature is resulting in many customers booking last minute getaways to the sun. With the big freeze now upon us, the winter sun destinations of Sharm el Sheikh, Agadir and Lanzarote were the most popular bookings over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Ian Chambers, Head of Digital & Marketing at Monarch Airlines, said: “Mobile conversion rate was significantly up year-on-year on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. With the combination of the cold weather and customers receiving new tablets and smart phones we have seen a strong spike in online bookings over the festive period.

“With bigger screens, a better mobile booking experience and more confident mobile customers, our mobile conversion rates have improved, resulting in bookings being significantly ahead of last year over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.”
