Miller Homes has launched its latest development in the Midlands, except this one is solely for animals.

As part of its ongoing Welcoming Wildlife project, the award-winning housebuilder has teamed up with Orchard Primary in Castle Donington to provide a number of animal homes and boxes for the school’s Environmental Area.

Amongst the dwellings donated was a ladybird lodge, home for hedgehogs and a bug’s boudoir. One of Miller’s expert builders also lent a hand to put up an owl house that the school already had.

As part of the visit, Miller Homes invited local owl enthusiast Paul Riddle along to advise the school on siting the nesting box and the types of owls that they can expect to see.

Malcolm Ceney, production director at Miller Homes Midlands, oversaw the school visit.

“Castle Donington is a beautiful village surrounded by open countryside,” said Malcolm. “Our Weavers Court site is close to Orchard Primary, and with so much wildlife in the area, we thought the school would be a great place for our new animal housing development.

“It was great to see the activity they are already doing in their Environmental Area and we hope that the homes we’ve donated will be a welcome addition and help the children to learn even more about the wildlife on their doorstep.”

Coinciding with the visit, children at the school were also invited to take part in a story writing competition to win a bird box for their own garden.

Anne Sherwood, headteacher at Orchard Primary School, added:

“We are obviously delighted to have received the wonderful donation from Miller Homes for our Environmental Area.

“It’s a great resource for the school and our pupils use the area to engage with and learn about nature and the environment, which plays an important part of their science education. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what residents the homes attract over the coming year.”

The project with Orchard Primary School is a continuation of Miller Homes’ Welcoming Wildlife project, which started last summer.
