Brits like to holiday with their partners - or at least men do

29th May 2015 Print

New research from AA Financial Services reveals who UK holidaymakers most like to go on holiday with – with some surprising results.

Most people said their favourite person to go away with is their partner. But far fewer women said their partner was their travel companion of choice: 58% of them compared to 79% of men.

Women, on the other hand, are more likely than men to say they like to go away with their friends (36% of them compared to 22% of men), or on their own (14% compared to 8% of men).

The research also showed that women are more likely to prefer going away with their parents than men (10% of women compared to 3% of men). In-laws were deemed to be the least favourite people to go on holiday with – overall just 2% said that’s who their ideal travelling companion would be.

Mark Huggins, Director of AA Financial Services commented: “The research shows that men and women have quite different ideas about who makes a good travel companion. The fact that fewer women prefer to go on holiday with their partners is quite telling – it clearly shows who the most agreeable gender to go away with is!”

Not everyone is looking forward to a few weeks away with only 59% of respondents going on holiday this year. Londoners (70%) are the most likely to do so.

Taking money abroad

Despite being less safe than taking cards or traveller’s cheques, the research indicates that local currency is still the most popular way to take holiday money abroad (83%). It’s more popular than credit cards (44%), debit cards (24%), travel currency cards (11%) and traveller’s cheques (6%).

Mr Huggins continued: “If there is a problem with one of your cards you can usually freeze it so that it can’t be used by anyone else. But if you lose your cash then it’s gone. Some travel insurance policies don’t cover cash loss.

“Travel currency cards are growing in popularity and this is particularly apparent amongst younger holidaymakers, doubtless because of the ease with which they can be topped up online or via Smartphone and they can keep an eye on how much they’re spending too.”

The AA Travel Currency MasterCard® Prepaid Card is accepted wherever there is a MasterCard acceptance mark and can provide a convenient and secure way to carry travel money, protected by chip and pin. It can be pre-loaded before you go away and topped up at any time.
