Conserve energy and save money with a new home

25th October 2015 Print

Big Energy Saving Week (w/c October 26) is a great time for householders to review their energy use and ensure they’re getting the best deal, but did you know that a brand new home can be more than twice as efficient as a second hand one?

Latest figures suggest that homeowners can save £1,332* per year on energy bills by living in a Redrow home thanks to higher standards of air tightness, good insulation, modern energy efficient builders and highly efficient double glazing.

Hannah Pollard, sales director for Redrow Homes (South West), said: “Our homes have been built with increased airtightness to significantly reduce the amount of heat lost. In fact, Redrow homes built in 2015 are 54% better at reducing heat loss than a typical 1970s’ home.

“What’s more, 79% of our homes built this year are fitted with smart meters, up on last year’s figure of 67%. So our customers can keep an eye on how much energy they’re using, putting them much more in control of their energy use and therefore allowing the new homebuyer to potentially save more money.”

Across the South West, Redrow is building a wide range of homes for first time buyers, families, downsizers and investors. They all boast Redrow’s high specification as standard including kitchens that are well equipped with integrated top brand name appliances, bathrooms and en-suites with sleek stylish suites, plus quality fixtures and fittings throughout.

The homebuilder has previously calculated that those who opt for a brand new four-bedroom Redrow home could save up to £1,332 per annum on their energy bills compared to an upgraded Victorian equivalent. It could pay for an extra family holiday, fuel for the family car, or, maybe be put towards paying off the mortgage early.

Here’s how the potential savings add up:

House type - Victorian 4 bed semi (with modern day improvements) / Energy cost per year £2,379* / Energy cost per month £198.25*
House type - Redrow Richmond 4 bed detached / Energy cost per year £1,047** / Energy cost per month £87,25**
Savings Energy cost per year £1,332 / Energy cost per month £111
