A step by step guide to getting in shape this year

18th February 2016 Print

Step 1: It all starts with the mind!

There's one New Year’s resolution almost everyone has, getting in shape! This can seem daunting at first, but once you get started it gets easier because it feels so good! The first thing is to get your mind ready to meet your body's needs by creating a positive mental attitude, this will go a long way towards helping you achieve your goals. Focus on how wonderful you will feel as your health improves! Taking proper care of your body will make you feel younger, be more active, and many of those niggling little aches and pains will simply fade away. Moreover, studies show that a positive mental attitude is beneficial to your health.

Step 2: You've got to move it, move it!

Sometimes we hear the word "exercise" and groan. Visions of slaving away in the gym, or huffing and puffing around the track come to mind, but it doesn't have to be that way. The simple act of walking has emerged as one of the healthiest exercises around, and can be a very pleasant part of your day. Get out of the house or office for a brisk, pleasant stroll outside, it feels great! Another excellent way to improve your health is swimming, which involves all the muscle groups. It's fun to jump in the water! Be sure to focus on technique rather than speed to begin with, and soon you will sail through your laps in what seems like no time, feeling invigorated! Walking and swimming are becoming more and more popular worldwide, as an enjoyable form of exercise. These natural forms of movement don't feel like a chore, and are easier to fit into our daily routines than regular gym sessions.  Walking and swimming are recommended as good ways to keep fit, check out these sporting lifestyle tips for further reading.

Step 3: Your mouth and you

First off, let's talk about what goes in it. Everyone loves sweets, and so we should! The problem is we tend to overdo them, putting on weight and harming our teeth. The next time you feel the craving for chocolate, why not pick up a banana instead?  Fresh fruit is scrumptious, and loaded with nutrition. Sometimes we forget that a healthy diet starts with the mouth! Studies show that oral health is vital to our well-being. Daily brushing and flossing is vital, but also be sure to regularly visit your dentist, who has access to the latest advances in dental health science, and uses the highest quality dental care products from providers such as BF Mulholland to keep your smile bright and your body healthy!

Step four: Make your daily routine second nature

Nothing momentous is ever achieved in just one day, but any goal can be accomplished if we work at it little by little, day by day! Write down this year's health goals and what you need to do to accomplish them, then post it in a place where you will see it every morning, to help inspire you to stay on your routine. By next year you will be in shape, and enjoying the health you have always wanted!
