MP unveils show home and learns of developer’s support for community

Housebuilder Redrow has launched its new show home at The Sycamores in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

The plush four-bedroom Sunningdale was officially opened by MP for Selby and Ainsty, Nigel Adams, who learned of the company’s continued support for the communities in which it builds, both in terms of job creation and the growth of amenities for the area.

Mr Adams said: “I’m pleased to be here today to open Redrow’s new show home at The Sycamores and to meet with local apprentices who are being employed at this development. In a week where we have seen yet again a decrease in the unemployment figures, this is very welcome.”

The Sycamores, which features premium three and four-bedroom house styles, complements the neighbouring Saxon Gardens development launched earlier this year.

Properties at both ventures off Low Street in the North Yorkshire village, hail from Redrow’s award-winning Heritage Collection, which marries Arts and Crafts architectural design of the late 19th / early 20th century with contemporary interiors.

But as well as offering an impressive range of spacious family homes, the creation of the developments has been a major jobs boost locally, something not lost on Mr Adams. For the last six years he has organised the Selby Jobs Fair, at which Redrow recently exhibited, giving it a chance to highlight the apprenticeships, graduate training programmes and other learning and development opportunities it offers annually.

Two local people who have benefited from those are Josh Hulls and Scott Arnold, both final year joinery apprentices for Redrow, who met Mr Adams during his visit to The Sycamores.

Josh, 19, from Selby, said: “I started college at first and then got an apprenticeship, learning on site and studying at college one day a week.

“Redrow has a good reputation for its apprenticeship scheme and I understand why. Being on site is very different from being in a college classroom and I feel I have learned far more with Redrow and had such excellent support and mentoring from the people here.

“Eventually I would like to go down the management route which, with Redrow, seems possible and, indeed, is encouraged. The opportunities are there for those who want them and are prepared to work hard.”

HBF (Home Builders Federation) statistics show that 4.5 jobs are supported for every new home built, through a combination of direct employment on site, indirect employment via the supply chain and as a result of spending in the area by construction workers and home owners too.

With 39 homes at The Sycamores and 251 homes at Saxon Gardens, including circa 25% affordable properties, that’s potential for more than 1,300 jobs to be supported over time.

In addition, The Sycamores and Saxon Gardens are part of a wider, joint landholding with Persimmon with whom Redrow has pledged more than £2 million to develop extra education facilities, bus stops and improvements to local healthcare as part of the planning process.

James Poynor, managing director of Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “We are very grateful to Nigel Adams for officially opening The Sycamores’ new Sunningdale show home and, in particular, giving us the opportunity to show him the work being done here.

“As we always say at Redrow, we are not only interested in building houses but in helping the communities where we build to flourish too.

“There is no more visible sign of that than with the beautiful homes we are producing, and the workforce – many of whom are from the local area - putting every effort and commitment into creating them to the very highest standard.”

The Sunningdale show home is a stunning four-bedroom detached property, which boasts a spacious kitchen and dining area, together with a separate lounge and handy snug. Downstairs the stylish, yet practical, accommodation also features a utility, cloakroom and integral double garage.

Upstairs are four generously-sized bedrooms, two of which have an en-suite, and a family bathroom. Prices for The Sunningdale start from £387,950, with three-bedroom house styles at the development starting at £289,950.
