This weekend, Portugal made history and was crowned the winner at Eurovision 2017 for the first time. But it seems the southern nation is taking the lead in another European competition as 2017’s most popular destination amongst British holidaymakers, according to findings released by Travel Republic.

In the last 30 days, online travel agent, Travel Republic has recorded a 16%* increase in Portugal holiday bookings year on year, with a significant increase of 53%** since Portugal took the Eurovision 2017 title.

Popular holiday destinations such as The Algarve and Madeira have all seen an increase in bookings, but further findings reveal singer Salvador Sobral’s home town of Lisbon saw the biggest surge since Saturday, with a 154% increase in bookings, compared to the same period in 2016.

Naomi Wilkinson, Marketing Director for Travel Republic, says, “Portugal has always been a favourite amongst our customers, for its beautiful beaches and unique living culture, but it is interesting to see how the ‘Eurovision’ effect has had a major influence on people’s holiday plans.”

With average high temperatures of 28°C in the summer and combination of perfect beaches, lively coastal towns and fascinating heritage, Portugal has something for everyone who comes to visit.

Travel Republic’s 2017 Summer Sale continues, with great holiday deals to many beach destinations including Eurovision winner Portugal. As an example, a family of four can travel to the Algarve with RyanAir from Prestwick for one week in June, and stay at 3* Club Alvaflor Apartments on a self-catering basis from as little as £189pp.
