Bellway triumphs at Homes for Scotland Awards

Bellway triumphs at Homes for Scotland Awards Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland West) has scooped a much coveted Homes for Scotland ‘Quality Award 2008’ (urban large category) in recognition of the company’s inspiring Mondriaan development in Glasgow.

Judged by an independent panel that was headed by Scotland’s chief planner, Jim MacKinnon, the Homes for Scotland awards sought this year to embrace the Scottish Government’s place making agenda, with the focus being on ‘Designing Places’ in an effort to create sustainable communities.

Situated on the edge of the Forth and Clyde Canal, in the Maryhill district of Glasgow, Mondriaan is an exceptional development of one and two-bedroom apartments, and three and four-bedroom townhouses, designed by one of Scotland’s most respected architectural practices, Holmes Partnership.

Bellway took the inspiration for its development from the renowned Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondriaan, where his linear style and use of vibrant colours is evident in the exteriors of the properties.

The judges were very impressed by Mondriaan and felt that Bellway Homes has created a radical new place amidst one of the most challenging social environments in Scotland. They felt that the development overall relates extremely well to the surrounding area and to the neighbouring canal.

Fraser Conn, Sales and Marketing Director, Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland West), who attended the awards ceremony at the EICC, was delighted to receive the award in front of 750 guests from broadcaster Sally Magnusson and the Minister for Communities, Stewart Maxwell.

Fraser commented, “On behalf of the team involved in the creation of Mondriaan, from the drawing board stage through to the completion of the construction process, I am honoured to be accepting this award.

“Bellway Homes is regarded as a market leader when it comes to major housing regeneration projects. By winning a Homes for Scotland ‘Quality Award’, this serves to further recognise our standing in this area, where we use innovative design techniques to deliver robust masterplans that transform brownfield sites into thriving communities, which Mondriaan is an excellent example of.”

This unique approach by Bellway Homes generates developments that not only respect the local environment that the company builds in, but ensure its homes reflect the needs of a particular local market rather that a ‘one-size fits all’ tactic.

Allan Martin, partner at Holmes Partnership, said “We are delighted that Mondriaan has won such a prestigious award. The project has been a real team effort and a product of a fantastic relationship between architect and client. Bellway is to be congratulated on its role in revitalising and regenerating the area of Ruchill.”

Homes for Scotland represents those building 95% of the country’s new homes and its annual ‘Quality Awards’ are designed to improve standards and promote best practice within the industry.

Only one property remains for sale at Mondriaan, a one-bedroom apartment priced from £114,995. Bellway Homes currently has a range of developments throughout west central Scotland.

Further information on each development is available by visiting Bellway.co.uk.
