bmibaby reports surge in Scottish city bookings

2nd February 2009 Print
As train prices rocket upwards by as much as 11 per cent in 2009, bmibaby is reporting a surge in bookings from passengers looking to avoid expensive train fares and beat the credit crunch. The low cost airline is seeing an increase in passengers flying to destinations such as Edinburgh and Glasgow, which are also served by the major rail companies.

Flight sales to the two Scottish cities from Birmingham International, East Midlands and Cardiff International Airport, from 2nd to 8th January 2009, have increased by up to 46 per cent, when compared to the same period in January 2008 and based on travel this month.

Passengers that may have previously travelled by train to Scotland are now taking advantage of the airline’s low fares. bmibaby is currently offering passengers up to 50 per cent off all routes, enabling people to pick up a fare to Scotland from as little as £21.99 one way including taxes and charges.

Crawford Rix, managing director, bmibaby said:

“There has never been a better time to travel by air. Whilst train prices are shooting up beyond the current rate of inflation, we are currently offering passengers up to 50 per cent off all fares for travel in 2009.

“This year people will be looking for the most time efficient and the most cost effective way to travel, and with train prices rocketing, consumers will search for cheaper and quicker modes of transport, and bmibaby is well placed to offer this.

“We provide a much quicker service than by train, for example Nottingham to Edinburgh on a train takes around five hours, compared to a flight which takes approximately one hour. Our passengers can also save time by using bmibaby’s online check in, thus avoiding a busy check in queue.

“We remain committed to providing low fares to Scotland.”

bmibaby’s online check in is as speedy as a click of the mouse, and is available from 48 hours to up to three hours before the scheduled departure time, for all passengers travelling with one item of hand baggage. The full list of airports at which online check in is available, can be found at bmibaby.com.
