SWISS names Airbus A320 ‘Arosa’

The name of Arosa, the popular Swiss alpine resort, will now be carried on an Airbus A320 of the Swiss International Air Lines fleet.

The twinjet, registration HB-IJE, was formally named at Zurich Airport by Vincenz Vital, the Mayor of Arosa, at a ceremony that was also attended by Christian Menet and Pascal Jenny, President and Director of Arosa Tourism respectively, and SWISS Chief Operating Officer Gaudenz Ambühl.

As well as representatives from Arosa and SWISS, the naming was also attended by Swiss ice hockey international Roman Wick, who was guest of honour of the Arosa delegation: the town is a partner of the Swiss national ice hockey team.

“We are delighted that a SWISS aircraft will now carry the name of our town,” said Mayor of Arosa Vincenz Vital.

“As a Swiss holiday destination, we attach tremendous importance to our partnerships with other ambassadors of our country and the values it stands for. Our involvement with the Swiss ice hockey team reflects Arosa’s strong sporting side; and our new partnership with SWISS mirrors our national and international renown as a classic alpine resort which can look back on a century-old tradition of Swiss hospitality and care.”

Under its new naming concept, SWISS has given its aircraft the names of the country’s cantonal capitals, airport communities and major tourist resorts. “In Canton Grisons, Arosa is located in one of Europe’s most attractive and varied holiday regions,” added Gaudenz Ambühl, Chief Operating Officer at SWISS.

“This is what links the town so closely with Zurich Airport: Arosa offers its guests a delightful stay in wonderful surroundings, while SWISS brings them to Switzerland from all over the world. And from today, we’ll be bringing them on the ‘Arosa’, too.”

The town’s name has been applied to the aircraft’s fuselage, while its coat of arms is displayed in the cabin.
