Kettering-based access platform manufacturer Cumberland Industries UK is offering to help utility companies, local authorities and arborists to drive down fleet replacement costs with its new 20m double articulating access platform mounted on the latest Iveco Daily 4x4 chassis.

Cumberland Industries had added a Daily 4x4 demonstrator to its fleet and believe this new rugged vehicle and boom combination fills a gap in the marketplace for a cost-effective high reach off-road access machine.

Luke Thurston, Sales Manager at Cumberland Industries UK, explains: “The Daily’s versatile chassis makes it ideally suited to this role, and its excellent off-road credentials provide a true go-anywhere solution.

“At just over £80,000 for the complete package, the Daily 4x4 represents a significant saving over some of the pricier off-road commercial vehicle chassis on the market, which can cost around £140,000 when mounted with identical access equipment.  In the current climate there is a real demand to drive down fleet costs, and we’re expecting significant interest in this new addition to our range,” he adds.

The demonstrator is based upon a Daily 55S18DW chassis plated at 5.5 tonnes and mounted with a 20m double articulating access platform offering unlimited rotation and an impressive 225 kg basket capacity.  Even when operating fully fuelled with a driver and passenger the vehicle still affords a generous payload allowance of over 435 kg.

Fleets not requiring the full 20m operating height can opt for 16m or 14m models, which allow an increase in payload capacity to approximately 800 kg and one tonne respectively.  Cumberland Industries also offer fully-insulated booms, enabling expertly trained and equipped operatives to work on live power lines.

Key to the Daily 4x4’s suitability is its custom-built sub frame and outriggers, designed in-house by Cumberland Industries, which ensures no on-board ballast is required – even when operating at its maximum outreach of 9m.

Powering the Daily 4x4 is a Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) 3.0 litre HPT engine which is capable of producing up to 400 Nm of torque over an engine speed range of 1,250 to 3,000 rev/min, and a maximum 176 hp between 3,200 and 3,500 rev/min.

This is coupled to a ZF 6S400 overdrive six speed transmission that drives through a transfer box to provide continuous four wheel drive.  The transfer box houses a third differential and a differential lock as standard equipment, with the controls allowing either high or low drive ratios which can be selected with the vehicle in motion.  There are also neutral and low range off-road ratios for arduous conditions, selectable with the vehicle at rest.  This provides the Daily 4x4 with a choice of 24 forward drive gears (12 for mixed routes and 12 for off-road routes), plus four reverse gears.

Ample stopping power is provided by twin piston disc brake sets, together with an Antilock Brake System (ABS) as standard to ensure that the vehicle is brought to a halt in complete safety during more demanding braking operations and difficult manoeuvres.  When operating in mud or snow, the ABS is automatically deactivated which is necessary when engaging the differential lock.

A new Daily 4x4 is offered with Iveco’s comprehensive three year / 100,000 miles* manufacturer warranty.  Cumberland Industries also provide a five year structural warranty on the boom, plus a 12 months parts warranty.
