Alternative snowy breaks from Black Tomato

20th October 2010 Print

Want to have an adventure in the snow before the ski season starts? Black Tomato have three suggestions for alternative snowy breaks:

Northern Lights in the Artic Circle

See the Northern Lights from the Svalbard archipelago in Norway - so far North, it's in the Arctic Circle. Stay in the former mining town of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, the largest island of the archipelago. As half the land is covered by glacier, the best mode of transport is by snowmobile, boat, dog sled or on skis. Stay at Basecamp Spitsbergen, which is made out of driftwood, sealskin and slate and where the glass ceiling provides a great view of the bright Northern Lights above. Explore the fjords and glaciers on a snowmobile and keep an eye out for roaming polar bears.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is from November to February. A five night trip with Black Tomato costs from £2,599 per person including flights, transfers and accommodation with breakfast.

Extreme Ice Climbing

Climb some of the most extreme ice walls and glacier terrain in the world with an ice climbing break in Chamonix. With Mont Blanc as a backdrop, enjoy two days of professional tuition learning how to summit ice waterfalls, scale vertical cliff faces and traverse deep crevasses.

The best time for ice climbing is from November to March. A three night trip with Black Tomato costs from £1,475 per person, including flights, transfers and accommodation with breakfast.

Explore Alaska by Snowmobile

Enjoy the ultimate snowmobile safari in Alaska. Spend four days driving a snowmobile from lodge to lodge following the Iditarod trail through the Alaskan wilderness. With just a specialist guide and a snowmobile for company, cover 1,000 miles of frozen rivers and icy swamps, through pine forests into the heart of the Alaskan mountain range. Explore the wilderness further with kayaking, whale watching and bear tracking.

The best time for the snowmobile safari is between November and April. A seven day trip with Black Tomato costs from £3,499 per person, including flights, transfers and accommodation with breakfast.
