Euro NCAP has awarded the Volvo V60 an overall five-star crash test rating, together with a maximum 100% score for Safety Assist.

The announcement follows the latest round of crash tests carried out by the European New Car Assessment Programme, which aims to provide car buyers with an independent assessment of a vehicle's crash safety performance.

Standard safety systems on all Volvo V60 (and S60 saloon) models include DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), dual stage driver and passenger airbags, SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), IC (Inflatable Curtain) and ABS brakes with Emergency Brake Assist. All models in the range also feature City Safety as standard - award-winning technology that can reduce or entirely avoid a rear end impact up to 19mph by automatically applying the brakes to bring the vehicle to a standstill if it senses a collision with the car in front and the driver hasn't reacted.

In addition, the Volvo V60 and S60 are available with world-first Pedestrian Detection technology. The system uses radar and a camera mounted in the front of the car to check for pedestrians moving in front of the car on the move and automatically applies the brakes if the driver doesn't respond to stop the car if it detects an imminent collision.

Peter Rask, Regional President of Volvo Car UK, said: "This latest round of crash test results is great news for Volvo and demonstrates our continued commitment to optimising the safety of our cars."

"Ultimately, Volvo's are designed around the people who drive or ride in them which is why we do everything we can in our research, development and testing to ensure that people are as well protected as possible when travelling in our cars. This is the latest step in our Vision 2020 which looks towards a future when nobody will be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo by 2020."

The Volvo S60 and V60 were launched in 2010 and are offer owners the highest levels of driving dynamics, class-leading safety and low emissions. All models in the range can be specified with R-DESIGN styling and improved dynamics, while DRIVe variants deliver impressive fuel economy of up to 65.7mpg and CO2 emissions of just 114g/km for S60 and 119g/km for V60.
