10th June 2011 Print

TAP Portugal has started direct operations to Vienna, the capital city of Austria.

The new destination will be served with five weekly frequencies and flights are operated with the A320 aircraft with seating capacity for 160 passengers. So far, reservations for those new flights add up to 22,000.

The Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Bernardo Trindade and Luiz Mór, Executive Member of the Board of TAP are both travelling today aboard the A320 “Luís de Freitas Branco” on the inaugural flight Vienna/Lisbon. “The launch of this new route fits within our strategy, aimed at harmonizing air transport policies with the targets set for the Tourism sector in Portugal”, said Bernardo Trindade.

“This route to Vienna as well as the new ones introduced this summer represent in the whole a great effort for TAP in consolidating its positioning as an international leading airline connecting Europe, Africa and Brazil”, said Luiz Mór.

Flights to Vienna depart Lisbon at 09:00, every Wednesday and Sunday, with arrival at 13:25 local time, while on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, flights depart at 13:30 arriving in Vienna at 17:50. Out of Vienna, flights operate on the same days, departing at 14:10 on Wednesday and Sunday with arrival at 16:45 in Lisbon. On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, flights depart the Austrian capital at 18:35 and arrive in Lisbon at 21:10 local time.

With the start of those direct operations between Portugal and Austria, TAP Portugal and Austrian Airlines, both company members of Star Alliance, are now expanding the scope of their commercial cooperation, thus providing customers with increased flight options and more benefits.

As of today, TAP offers five new destinations in Austria through code-share in Austrian Airlines domestic services to Innsbruck, Linz, Graz, Salzburg and Klagenfurt via its hub in Vienna, while Austrian is also code-sharing on TAP direct operations between Lisbon and Vienna.

In addition, TAP customers can from now on also benefit from convenient connections to quite a number of new destinations within Austrian’s network to Central Europe, such as Pristine, Kosovo; Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina; Timisoara, Romania and Kosice, Slovakia.  Furthermore, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, the capital cities of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria respectively, are also added to the new code-share framework with Austrian Airlines.

Vienna, the modern and vibrant capital of Austria, is an important cultural and historical centre as well, with great potential to attract both leisure and business travellers. Vienna is also one of TAP six new European destinations due for this season.

Altogether, these new destinations translate into some 17 per cent increase in the company’s network extent in Europe alone, adding up to 49 destinations in the Continent.

With such an extended offer, TAP reinforces its capability and efforts in attracting larger Tourism volumes to Portugal, also enhancing the strategic positioning of its Lisbon hub. Likewise, the Portuguese national market can now access several new and diversified routes.
