4th August 2011 Print

Jet2.com has launched Glasgow’s only direct scheduled flight to the Italian capital of Rome.  Prices start from less than the price of an Italian meal for two at just £29.99 one way including taxes.

The new destination has been launched following research carried out with Jet2.com’s Glasgow customers who voted Rome as the destination they would most like to visit from Glasgow in 2012. Jet2.com has responded to this customer research by putting flights on sale today which will operate up to three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays with the first flight commencing from 29 March 2012.

Those looking for great value city breaks to Rome can also take advantage of offers from sister company Jet2holidays – with ATOL protected breaks to the historic city starting from just £299 per person for return flights and three nights bed and breakfast at the stunning three star Aurora Hotel.

Fiumicino Airport is Italy’s premier airport and has great facilities, shops and transport links. Fiumicino is the ideal gateway for visitors from Scotland to access this great city, the cruise port of Civitavecchia and the Lazio region.

Rome’s well preserved Forum, Coliseum and Pantheon provide a fascinating insight into the ancient civilisation and are at the heart of this thriving city; the Vatican City, with its stunning Sistine Chapel is fascinating from both a spiritual and artistic point of view.  These sites, as well as the love of ‘La Dolce Vita’, are why Rome is one of the world’s most popular destinations.

Steve Heapy, Chief Commercial Officer of Jet2.com, commented: “We’re delighted to make such an important destination accessible direct from Glasgow Airport. Rome is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, and it’s great to be able to offer the people of Scotland the opportunity to travel to Rome’s leading airport at low flight prices with Jet2.com and on great value breaks with Jet2holidays.  All of our customers can enjoy our generous 22kg baggage allowance, allocated seating and friendly flight times and can secure a package break for just £60 deposit per person – so they can book now and pay the balance 10 weeks before they travel.

“Glasgow is a very important base for us – as we’ve demonstrated by announcing an additional seven destinations since we started flying from Glasgow just over four months ago so customers can now choose from 14 exciting destinations. The new Rome route should also open up more opportunities for tourists looking to travel from Italy to Scotland, bringing with it important investment into the area.”

As well as the sights Rome is a great city for shopping, dining or partying with friends. Rome is also popular for its many events, music and theatre. Jet2.com’s flights times are perfectly planned to enable people to take weekend or midweek breaks.

Francois Bourienne, Commercial Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “We’ve had considerable success in expanding our route network in recent months and Jet2.com’s decision to add one of Europe’s major capital cities to our list of destinations is tremendous news for the airport and our customers.

“Jet2.com has continued to grow since its arrival at Glasgow Airport in March this year and I’m delighted it has responded to demand from passengers with the introduction of Rome. The direct flight to the Italian capital will undoubtedly prove popular with business and leisure travellers alike.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Jet2.com's new direct service to Glasgow from Rome presents us with the opportunity to increase short break visitors from Italy with the route expected to generate 33,000 bed nights for the city and £1.8 million in visitor spend.

“We are certain that Glasgow’s style and cultural credentials will resonate with potential visitors from Italy and we will be working closely with Jet2.com and Glasgow Airport to implement joint marketing communications activity, which will maximise growth opportunities from this key market.

“I am delighted that Glasgow City Council’s Air Route Development Fund, which is managed by GCMB, has helped secure this new service.

“Italy currently represents the seventh largest international market for Glasgow with 33,500 trips being made annually to the city by Italian visitors, which equate to £9 million in local economic benefit. “

Since Jet2.com’s first flight took off from Glasgow, and in addition to the new route announced today, the airline has announced flights to Geneva, Barcelona, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Malaga, and even a Christmas shopping break to New York.
