Stobart and Nestlé rewarded for friendly miles

Eddie Stobart’s partnership with Nestlé UK, which focuses on driving down carbon emissions from its supply chain, has earned the sustainable distribution award at last night’s IGD Food Industry Awards.
The glitzy ceremony celebrates excellence in the grocery distribution industry and judges were impressed by the companies’ use of eco-friendly, gas-powered trucks to help reduce pollution.
Eddie Stobart operates warehousing and transport for some of Nestlé’s products and the transport company introduced a small fleet of Volvo FM dual-fuel tractor units which run on liquefied natural gas or bio-methane.
They are powered by a mixture of 70% gas and 30% conventional diesel and deliver friendlier miles as carbon emissions are slashed by nearly 15%.
The eco-trucks are used to transport Nestlé products to and from its state-of-the-art warehouse at Bardon and from factories across the UK.
Eddie Stobart is well-known for its efforts to deliver sustainable distribution within the logistics sector. In 2006, it launched its first rail service which has removed millions of truck miles from the road and has been campaigning for higher-volume trailers which will also help cut down carbon emissions.
Phil Spittle, Eddie Stobart General Manager Fleet, said: “The award is recognition from the grocery industry that we are helping to make a real difference with regards to sustainable distribution. The environment is an important issue for both Nestlé and Eddie Stobart so this partnership has been significant and extremely positive. The gas-powered trucks have helped cut carbon emissions and reduce both companies’ impact on the environment.”
