Seven couples make the leap at Tower Bridge on Valentine’s Day

17th February 2012 Print

Tower Bridge confirmed its reputation as one of London’s most enchanting locations with no fewer than seven proposals of marriage taking place at a Valentine’s Day special evening event.

The happy occasion, hosted by award-winning food and event experts Seasoned Events, was held on the Bridge’s 42 metre high Walkways that span the timeless tides of the Thames. For the sixth year running, the popular ‘Champagne and Chocolate’ event sold all 1600 tickets to indulge with a romantic backdrop of sweet scented flowers, seductive lighting and live music plus sweeping views of the twinkling London skyline.

The names of one lucky newly engaged couple were drawn from a hat at the close of the evening to win free venue hire of the Walkways for their reception, worth in the region of £6,000. Colin Payne proposed to Mel Rose after four years together. The couple, from London, have already set the date of 25th May 2013 for their nuptials and will also be holding the marriage ceremony at the Bridge. Mel works as a Head Teacher in Tower Hamlets and Colin is a Creative Director, with clients as diverse as Macy’s in New York to British rock giants, The Who.

Colin explained, “Mel gets very excited about beautiful things. When she first moved down from Nottingham I was living in Clapham so she would cross Tower Bridge on her daily commute and would often send mobile phone picture messages of it. Four years on, when either of us is nearby, we still do the same, so it seemed like the ideal place to propose.”

Chris Earlie, Marketing and Creative Development Manager at Tower Bridge commented, “Hearty congratulations to all the happy couples. We consider it a great honour that they should choose Tower Bridge as the setting for one of the most important moments of their lives. The enduring symbolism of a marriage proposal on a bridge, and particularly one offering such a dazzling, dizzying bird’s eye view over London, is clearly not lost on the city’s lovebirds.”

Tower Bridge offers the ideal setting for wedding and civil partnership ceremonies and receptions, both extravagant and intimate, with a range of flexible spaces and packages.

The Tower Bridge Walkways, in partnership with Seasoned Events, won the Best Event Space of The Year (Small) in the 2011 Event Awards and was also crowned best small venue of the year (Max. capacity 250) at the 2010 Eventia Awards.
