Scott Byrom, utilities manager at price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, said: "These price rises from EDF Energy will be felt worst in London and the South East, as well as the South West. EDF has close to three million customers in these regions and the bulk of those are on its standard tariff.

“With npower and EDF both having increased prices we expect the four other major providers to follow suit soon. For those on standard tariff the benefits of moving to an online monthly direct debit tariff immediately are now greater than ever. For example - customers on npower's SOL8 tariff saw no price increase a week ago when npower raised its standard prices. SOL8 is no longer available for new customers, so its existing customers have been laughing all the way to the bank.

"Our advice to consumers is to hurry up and change to the cheapest product possible. British Gas Click Energy 4 is consistently the cheapest tariff on the market, but British Gas may well stop taking applications for it soon."
