Job Description
Our client is searching for a Database Administrator to ensure that database monitoring and alerting is in place and that the NOC have adequate procedures to both understand the alert and escalate/resolve.
• Provide day-to-day administration and support of database systems to ensure they support the requirements for data access and applications of key business functions.
• Build and/or customise databases to meet business requirements, gathering user requirements, designing and implementing logical and physical data models working with Architects and Developers to realise company Business objectives.
• Define and implement and monitor appropriate backup and recovery procedures to ensure that, in the event of systems failure or other disasters affecting systems availability, impact on the continuity of the business is minimised.
• Monitor database performance, diagnose performance problems and carry out remedial action. Plan for, test and implement new database/system software.
• Undertake analysis and improvement/development of database queries, scripts, stored procedures and triggers to support business and user requirements.
• Provide second-level support for business applications to diagnose and resolve user or system problems, and to ensure knowledge transfer to those responsible for first-line support to enable them to perform their role effectively.
• Provide the standards and framework for database development and qualities within the organization.
• Develop ad hoc reports according to business specifications.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation on systems and contribute to departmental knowledge resources.
• Estimate work effort required from a project perspective, execute agreed project work and produce comparisons to fine tune the Project Management process.
• Be up-to-date with the latest developments in the relational database field.
• Be proactive at looking at ways to continue improving business systems and procedures.
Essential
• 5+ years proven relevant technical experience working with a collection of the following systems: -
o Oracle Certified Professional (10g)
o PostgreSQL design, implementation and administration
o MS-SQL design, implementation and administration
o MySQL design, implementation and administration
o Database Implementation on Solaris/Linux
o Database Implementation on Windows Server Environment
o Creating and implementing Database monitoring/alerting scripts
• 5+ knowledge and experience of principles of database design/management, preferably within a high volume financial transaction or ISP environment.
• The role holder must have extremely strong analytical and trouble-shooting skills coupled with the ability to deliver project work.
• Ability to monitor, analyse and fine-tune resource intensive queries/transactions.
• Previous experience with online, real-time, high volume financial transaction application systems.
• Business / Technical analytical and ITIL process skills and experience.
• Sound understanding of the business processes, products and services and of how databases systems support these and an awareness of opportunities for how this might be developed and enhanced.
• Documentation / process writing skills
Desirable
• M.Sc or B.Sc in IT or Computing or equivalent work experience.
• A background in system integration and maintenance is highly preferable
• Knowledge of Networking and Security
• Knowledge of load-balancing devices (F5)
• Knowledge of SAN/NAS/DAS and Clustering technologies
• ITIL Practitioner.
• Prince2 Foundation and/or Project Management experience
Salary is £45-£50K
