The Century’s finest Grands Prix cars make a Sand Pit Stop at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

As part of its celebration of ‘Racing for Glory – a Century of Grands Prix’, visitors to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will get the chance to make a unique pit stop – at a sand pit. Ten of the last Century’s greatest racing cars – one per decade, from legendary manufacturers such as Ferrari, Renault, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz - will be sculpted in sand, and put on display on the Cricket Pitch at Goodwood House.

These magnificent Grands Prix greats will be carved in finest-quality English sand by world renowned sand performance and installation artist Andrew Baynes. During the Festival, the final two of the ten Grands Prix cars will slowly emerge before the audience’s eyes as Andrew sculpts Nigel Mansell’s 1992 World Championship-winning Williams F1 car, as well as the Ferrari in which Michael Schumacher won a historic seventh world title.

Andrew Baynes has received more than 70 commissions over the past twelve years, including sand sculptures displayed at The Royal Festival Hall and many galleries and festivals. The ten Grands Prix cars commissioned specifically for the Festival of Speed are Andrew’s first full-size vehicle caricatures. He will use over 200 tonnes of sand for their construction during the Festival.

Since its inception in 1993, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has always found ways of surprising and delighting visitors, helping to establish this annual event as the world’s biggest ‘must-see’ celebration of motor racing history.

This year is no exception. Over the three days of 7.8.9 July, Goodwood Park, near Chichester, West Sussex, will be home to more than 300 competition vehicles, from early Edwardian racers, to the latest hi-tech Formula 1 and World Rally Championship cars.

Younger Goodwood visitors, inspired by Andrew’s ‘sandy work’, will be able to try their hand at sand sculpting during one-hour creative sessions in the Junior Sand Pod, part of the Junior Festival of Speed.
