Students gain insight into construction careers
23 October 2006
A recent event hosted by Persimmon Homes in conjunction with National Construction Week saw students from schools across South Wales cross trowels in an annual bricklaying competition!
Nine teams from schools including, Mountain Ash Comprehensive in Rhondda Cynon Taff and Bryntirion Comprehensive in Bridgend, took part in the competition where they were tasked with building a brick barbeque to a set design and within a time limit. Competition was fierce but the title eventually went to students from St Illan Comprehensive in Caerphilly who were commended for their teamwork and attention to detail.
Alongside the bricklaying competition, the action packed day also gave the students a thorough insight into the wide of range of exciting occupations on offer in the construction industry.
“The day was designed to show students interested in a career in construction the wide range of professional opportunities open to them from the creative to the scientific,” commented Persimmon’s construction director Gareth Powell, who organised the event. “Construction really does have something to offer wherever your talent lies, with the choice of roles varying from architecture and civil engineering to electrician and demolition.
“As a company that is continuing to grow and expand its workforce, we are extremely keen to encourage more young men and women in Wales to explore the wide range of careers available in what is an extremely challenging and constantly changing industry.”
