On Mecredi des Cendres, the final day of the celebrations, the costumes change to black and white and the spirit of the French Caribbean Carnival changes when ‘Vaval’ (an effigy representing the spirit of Carnival) is taken to the coast to be burned, thus banishing him for another year.
