Conran to open its latest Gastrodome – in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, the gastronomic capital of Scandinavia, will from 6 December 2006 have another star attraction, the Conran designed Custom House.
So, why Copenhagen and why now?
“Copenhagen is rapidly becoming the Barcelona of northern Europe. It has extensive waterfronts rather like Venice, a thriving eating out scene with hundreds of cafes and excellent restaurants, wonderful old buildings and some pretty stunning new ones. I’ve always been a great admirer of Danish design and as a young designer in the Fifties, I often visited the annual furniture exhibition. When I returned to Copenhagen last year, I was delighted to find there is still a very lively design scene with lots of quirky little shops and pedestrianised shopping streets.”

Custom House, will be housed in the 1930’s fantastic Art Deco building on Havnegade 44, overlooking the Copenhagen waterfront and with splendid views towards the Opera House. The exterior has been carefully restored to its original appearance, in the traditional dark brown of the old Toldkammeret (Custom House), while the interior has been opened up into a homely and sophisticated space. The building will house a series of bars and restaurants, including its own bakery and delicatessen.
On the ground floor is the relaxed Custom House Bar & Grill, in timber and red leather surrounds, evoking the spirit of traditional Danish tug boats. Across the lobby is the gourmet Italian restaurant Bacino, in elegant light grey and silver and with screens of polished metal circles. Both spaces open onto a long harbourside terrace for outside eating. The Deli faces the residential street and will sell fresh food and ingredients from the restaurants.
An enclosed promenade runs along the first floor, providing views over the water and access to Custom House’s Japanese restaurant, Ebisu, with a walnut dining counter, black lacquer panelling and a traditional robatoyaki (open charcoal grill). In the west area of the first floor is a private dining room and a 100 square-meter banqueting space.
Copenhagen has slowly established itself as the gourmet capital of Scandinavia. It has no less that 10 Michelin rated restaurants, and with the addition of the new Conran experience as from next month – the Danish capital is further establishing itself as a destination for the gourmet traveller.
