Les Sables d'Olonne is by far the most chic resort of the Vendée; this fishing port has great shops and markets as well as a superb beach. The central market hall (open seven mornings a week in summer; closed Mondays out of season), next to the church, is a paradise for foodies.

If you do manage to exhaust the many activities in the resort head out to La Chaume an ancient fisherman's quarter full of charm with white-washed houses and tiled roofs. The Forest d'Olonne is also a must and comprises acres of dunes crisscrossed by footpaths along with the Ile de Noirmoutier which can be reached by bus in three hours.
